GOLD LEAF AND PAINTED SIGNAGE

Willow Deep Studio provides custom professional gold leaf or painted signage for your business, house numbers for your historic home, and entrance signs for your country cabin. Choose from a variety of traditional gilding techniques, styles and fonts for your signage, or owner/artisan Brenna will work with you to create an original design or logo from scratch. Owner/artisan Brenna is a member of the Society of Gilders and has years of professional experience applying verre églomisé, the french term for the traditional technique of gilding onto the back of glass to make a mirror finish. Signage can be gilded and/or painted directly onto your storefront window or house transom or on wood, metal, glass or other material so it can hang separately and be transportable if needed. House numbers or business signage may involve a vinyl stencil or be drawn by hand, depending on the look desired. ARCHITECTURAL GOLD LEAF

Gilding involves applying thin leaves of genuine gold or precious metal alloys to a surface. Numerous techniques exist depending on the surface and look desired, but to simplify, usually either a size (glue, for matte finish) or gelatin (for mirror finish) is applied to the prepared surface before each thin leaf is applied by hand. Multiple layers of gold may be required. The leaf is then burnished (polished) before being protected with a layer of varnish. Gold leaf is an extremely delicate material and turns to dust immediately on contact with one’s skin (just one of the many aspects that make is special!), so skillful handling is required.
Architectural gold leaf is a skilled art of detail, whether it entails adding a strip of 23k gold to decorative moldings in a house, adding a personalized design to an instrument to make it one-of-a-kind, or giving new life to a pair of old candlesticks. Owner/artisan Brenna likes to say “I gild anything – try me!”

The process of making gold leaf mirrors dates back all the way to the first century AD and can create beautiful textures that add a classic touch to any home. Gilded mirrors can also be hand-etched or distressed to look as if they are antique, and this can entail many different effects depending on the style desired. For more contemporary pieces, pieces can be crafted using repurposed antique or new acrylic mirror cut into various shapes with stained glass incorporated into the design or border.
